More for free

Gitter is a communication product for communities and teams on GitHub.

Since launching our paid plans in September last year, we've had a lot of feedback on how people's usage of Gitter has changed. We've given this a great deal of thought and today are announcing a simpler paid plan and giving away a lot more for free at the same time.

Rather than limiting usage of features such as chat history and the number of private rooms, we're changing our paid plan around the size of your team and rooms. We think this is a great proposition for small teams to communicate better with Gitter, both amongst communities and privately within your team or company.

Our free plan now contains:

  • Unlimited number private rooms
  • Unlimited chat history
  • Unlimited integrations (as before)
  • Unlimited public rooms (as before)

The number of people in any of your organisation and private rooms will now be limited to 25. To expand this limit, our Pro Plan is just $5/user/month.

Public rooms will remain unlimited in size.

We are also removing our existing Personal Plan, this means you can create as many private chat rooms as you like under your personal account and will also have unlimited chat history in those rooms.

How does this affect you?

We release that this change has impact, both on existing paid customers and free customers. We've tried to be as fair and generous as possible with any decisions. If you're not happy with anything, please feel free to get in touch and we'll do out utmost to accommodate you.

Existing paid plan customers

We've decided not to cancel existing plans, even if you fall under this limit. Customers on our paid plans receive an elevated level of support and some customers like to pay us money regardless to support our business.

If you wish to cancel your existing plan, please visit https://billing.gitter.im. If you feel this is an incorrect decision on our behalf, please feel free to get in touch via our support site or support@gitter.im and we will gladly refund your most recent payment and cancel your plan for you.

For existing customers on our Bronze Plan who pay $2/user/month, you will continue to pay just $2/user/month.

Free plans with large teams

We've manually reached out via email to every team who have more than 25 people in their rooms and offered a free plan for life. We understand your decision to use Gitter may have been under different circumstances and we in no way want to lose you as customers.

If you have missed this email or it was not received, please contact support and we will gladly sort this out for you.

When does this change happen?

We will switch over to the new plans on Tuesday 31st March.

How much do I pay for 26 users?

To lift the limit of 25 users per room, you will be charged $5 for each user in your GitHub organisation using Gitter. This would be equivalent to $130 per month.
